SMART Recovery (Sobriety Support) Meeting Wed. Dec 5th at 7:30

The Wingnut Anarchist Collective will be hosting an unofficial SMART Recovery meeting on Wednesday December 5th at 7:30 pm.

The idea of having some kind of sobriety peer support group in Richmond that’s an alternative to AA seems to have struck a chord with a lot of people. This is the 2nd meeting around that idea.

We are waiting on one member to get an official facilitator training, but in the mean time, we want to start having meetings of interested sober/trying to get sober folks to help support each other and practice for when the group becomes official.

SMART Recovery is a program to help support people who are sober and are trying to get/stay sober. It is a non-religious program, and an alternative to the AA/NA model. Once we have an officially trained facilitator, we can begin to make the moves necessary to have our chapter recognized by courts and such as an official option for people who are required to attend a sobriety group. But in the mean time, we’d like to start supporting each other. And get more people familiar with the program so that we have many capable facilitators, even if they aren’t all officially trained.

This is a sober, all ages event.

Hello Fellow Activists, Organizers, Protesters, etc.
` We are writing to let you know about a resource currently being developed with the aim of supporting the Richmond activist scene.
This resource is the website Richmond Legal Support (www.richmondlegalsupport.org). The website is a project of the Richmond Anarchist Black Cross, a prison abolition and political prisoner support group.
Richmond Legal Support is intended to be a central point where activists from many different organizations can plug in when facing legal difficulties in order to centralize this information and keep folks from having to rebuild the wheel every time there is a protest that results in legal trouble.
The website will enable people from various movements to be able to submit write-ups or information they want written up about legal issues, cases, upcoming court dates, support campaigns for the arrested, funds needed etc.
Richmond Legal Support is a website created to serve as a clearinghouse for information on legal issues facing activists, organizers, and community members in Richmond which focus on civil liberties and/or social justice issues.
Richmond Legal Support has also been created to provide support for the activists, organizers, and community members in Richmond who are facing legal trouble and prison due to their participation and action around civil liberties and/or social justice issues.
Richmond Legal Support is also prepared to provide support to political prisoners from Richmond- helping with their cases, raising funds, and raising awareness. Fortunately, there are currently no explicitly political prisoners from Richmond. But if and when that day comes, Richmond Legal Support will be here to help.
We are also looking for ways that Richmond Legal Support can offer help to people before they get into legal trouble- hopefully finding ways to link people planning activist events to legal observers, copwatchers, and hopefully even lawyers before there is a legal issue.

Capture the Flag and Amazing Show!

Even though yesterday was a super long day that started out really poorly, with Jeremy having a gun in his face and getting robbed, we managed to pull off an amazingly nice end to the day.
While we were waiting for the show to start, Kayla Dean got the neighborhood kids excited about capture the flag. She grabbed some flags (red and black, duh). We went to the vacant lot across the street and played a bunch of rounds of capture the flag with about 12 kids. They were silly and we were silly. It was awesome and we are looking forward to more games with the kids.
After we all ran around for a bit, we were on the front porch waiting for bands to tune up, when one kid ran up and told us he was worried the cops were going to harrass us. We were confused and said, no the cops aren’t harrassing us. Then he managed to spit out that he was worried about the cops harrassing us because they were harrassing someone down the street. Copwatch is a lot easier with smart kids around. So we hightailed it down Barton to make sure the cops didn’t rough up someone they were arresting.
Then it was show time! Some of our great friends had come over, but the crowd was small. I believe the general consensus among Wingnuts was, Their Loss! Cause all the bands were freaking AMAZING. Stefan Fink went on first, then Wood Spider, and then The Armadillos. They were all such amazing musicians! We were smiling and singing along late into the night. All the performers were extremely animated and entertaining. They also had some awesome art, zines, and home screened patches for sale.
It was a really good fucking night. The Wingnut is extremely grateful for our supportive neighbors and our supportive new friends from out of town. If you missed it, sorry, but we are here for the long haul, so check us out some other time.
