For years in RVA we have had a rally and a parade to commemorate this holiday and for lack of planning this year it looks like there will be no official rally with speakers but we will still be doing the amazing parade! I would love it if as many of you beautiful People out there as possible could take the day off and come take part in the parade! Bring any kind of musical instrument you want because we will be making alot of noise! the larger the crowd for the parade the better it will be so please bring all your friends!
We will need a lot of Bike marshals to help direct traffic so if you have a bike please bring it!
Word on the screet is that No BS Brass will be leading the march along with Captain Captain!
The Parade will begin at 6 but we will all start gathering in the park at 5

IWW Food & Retail Workers United

On behalf of Fellow Worker Moriah “Mo” Karn, the Richmond General Membership Branch of the Industrial Workers of the World and IU640 (Restaurant, Hotel, & Building Service Workers Industrial Union) are initiating a campaign to demand that $183.18 in unpaid wages be paid in full to fellow worker Karn.

Fellow worker Karn worked as a bartender and waitstaff for 3rd St. Diner located at 218 E. Main St. in Richmond, Virginia. Fellow worker Karn has yet to receive any compensation for their labor after working a total of 86 hours at a wage of $2.13 an hour, between November 3rd and November 22nd, 2011.

Although in the state of Virginia, it is a violation of law to withhold a final paycheck from an employee after removal (see §40.1-29 Va State Code); the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry was of little help.  When fellow worker Karn filed a complaint with the Virginia Department of Labor, they were told that because there was no written proof of their hours worked, ie. a time sheet, schedule, etc., and because the employer failed to process her W2 form, there was nothing the Department of Labor could do for her.

In lieu of this news we, on Friday April 6, 2012 a letter was issued to owner, Mr. William “Billy” Polyaris requesting that fellow worker Karn be paid in full by 4:00pm Friday April 12, 2012, or further action would follow.  We received no response.

Whereas the inability of the state to procure justice for workers who are victims of wage theft, and whereas Mr. Polyaris appears to have no issue with exploiting workers, we call upon supporters to participate in a phone blast, putting pressure on management, demanding retribution for Karn and her fellow workers.

Please call the following numbers:

Some Facts About Tipped-Employees’

The Federal Minimum Wage was last raised in 2009 from $6.55 an hour to $7.25 an hour in July, 2009. Some states (not Virginia) have raised the minimum wage,  however there hasn’t been any legislation to raise the Federal Minimum Wage for tipped employee’s since 1991.

Originally, the federal tipped worker minimum wage was 60% of the full minimum wage.  However, it was frozen at just $2.13 per hour in 1991.  Because it has not been increased at all in the decades since then, it has plummeted in value to less than 30% of the minimum wage.(1)

Many states provide stronger protections for tipped workers by requiring that tipped workers be paid above the federal rate.  Illinois guarantees tipped workers 60% of the minimum wage.  In New York and Connecticut it’s approximately 70%.  And Alaska, California, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, Oregon and Washington guarantee tipped workers the full minimum wage – a best practice that has successfully reduced poverty among tipped workers in those states.(2) Why can’t Virginia become one of those states?

According to the National Restaurant Association, 1 in 10 working Americans nationally work in restaurants which collectively register sales exceeding $600 billion.  Virginia restaurants employ over 342,200 people, and were projected to register $12.8 billion in sales.  Restaurant jobs represent 9% of employment in Virginia.

Direct Action Training
Wednesday 4/25

Potluck Supper 5:30 – 6:30
Training 6:30 – 9:00

Struggles for justice have intensified this year as our communities face an all-out assault on our rights. Growing ranks of activists getting organized to fight back find increased repression targeting protest and free speech. If ever a moment called us to bold action it is now.

Direct action can be a powerful tool to focus our collective power. In this highly interactive workshop we’ll explore the basics of how to plan organize and implement a safe, effective direct action. topics covered will include de-escalating behaviors in tense situations, quick decision-making, roles and responsibilities and more.

This training is offered in support of our movements for justice in this region by Occupy RVA and the Wayside Center for Popular Education.

What to Expect When You Are Expecting… To Be Arrested
Richmond Legal Process Guideline for Anarchists and Others

This is an outline for some important things to keep in mind when embarking on any enterprise which may lead to police detainment or arrest.

This guideline is specifically aimed at folks who might be at risk for arrest due to the political nature of their activities – from protests to civil disobedience to other forms of direct action.

Even when it is no one’s intention to be arrested, the police state will do what it do.

Preparing ahead of time, mentally and logistically can make both those incarcerated and their support network a lot less stressed out.

This guideline is a work in progress and we encourage any suggestions or additions – let us know at wingnut_collective@yahoo.com

This text is available online at: http://www.wingnutrva.org

The Wingnut Anarchist Collective house on the Northside of Richmond. The Wingnut is a sober space- no booze, no drugs, no macho bullshit. The Wingnut has resources such as free zines and literature, tools, and comfy couches to offer the community. We are down with hosting meetings or events for other groups. We will likely host workshops in the future on using certain tools. If there are workshops you want to do but you need a location feel free to contact us. You can bring donations for the Really Really Free Market or Food Not Bombs by anytime. We are also willing to host acoustic shows and events like benefit dinners if they are sober. Just talk to us! Every 2nd and 4th Wednesday at 7 is Craft Night, bring projects you are working on, projects you want to be working on, random supplies, sewing projects, collaborative art ideas etc. Every Sunday is Food Not Bombs- come by around 1 to help decide on a meal, wash and cut produce, cook food, wash dishes, and then take it to Monroe Park to share with the community!

Know Your Rights Training (Richmond Copwatch offers this training for free!)

Security Culture Training (Wingnut Anarchist Collective offers this training for free!)

Group discussion with participants if possible- to discuss goals of event, response to police, etc. ie. if its civil disobedience then maybe a goal is for people to be arrested. But if you are not trying to get arrested what is the plan? Where should people meet up? etc.

Action briefings combined with a kind of pep rally can be really important. Get everyone together to talk about their experiences getting arrested and going through the legal system. This is especially helpful for people who have never been arrested before who are really pumped and scared at the same time. (more…)

In an effort to help activists and anarchists in the Richmond area from having to rebuild the wheel, the Wingnut Anarchist Collective is posting this Press Contact list. Hopefully this list will be helpful whenever groups need to send out press releases or contact reporters when an event is occuring.

If you have additions to this list please send them to us at wingnut_collective@yahoo.com and we will gladly keep this list up to date as a resource for our community.

We have categorized these contacts by media type. We also recommend that people program in the phone numbers to their phones so that the media can be contacted quickly when unexpected events occur.

We will be adding the snail mail addresses for these contacts in the near future.

We showed up to the park around 4, and pretty much immediately jumped straight into organizing. A bathroom was built, a short list of demands was started, and an initial meeting with all participants concerning pigs and media was had. Crucial info was taken down for the folks who are willing to get arrested, and the banner was raised.

There were between 25 and 30 of us last night… including folks who regularly congregate in the park, a couple folks from IWW, Food Not Bombs, Queer Action, and a surprising number of people who just came over to play music and have a great time. There was only one incident with police, before dark, when we were told to take a tent down… but it’s been all quiet since, with no interaction with the cops (and very little sleep).

Today is going to be bigger and better…. more banners, more people, bigger plans, and a filmographer from Boston who’s going to be here with us for a bit. It looks like it’s going to be a beautiful day, and at least another night here.

October is a month with a lot of significance in regards to the issues of race, racism, white privilege, etc. This event (which has location TBA, so stay tuned) is just a part of the many events and commemorations happening in October. If you don’t know about who Gabriel was, or what the deal is with the burial ground that VCU has paved over, make it out to hear people talk about what is going on with these issues in Richmond.

It’s about time to come together and have a community discussion about the progress on reclamaing Richmond’s African Burial Ground. Following the success of the documentary, Meet Me In The Bottom: The Struggle to Reclaim Richmond’s African Burial Ground, more and more individuals and organizations are stepping forward to declare their support for this effort. Local, state, public and private interests have been meeting and makin…g plans for this site and others in Shockoe Bottom without a way to hear from the community. The Future of Richmond’s Past and the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War and the End of Slavery are creating unprecendented opportunities for public discourse on difficult topics. Who is telling what histories? To what purpose? Let’s come together and provide some feedback, some ideas for addressing the struggle for the Burial Ground and similar challenges facing Richmonders and Virginians every day. What would Gabriel do? SAVE THE DATE and plan to attend on October 10, 2010 at 6pm.See More

This is the Wingnut Statement of Purpose which we made as a handout and distributed to hundreds of houses in Southern Barton Heights:

Hello!

The house you may have noticed at 2005 Barton Avenue is called The Wingnut, and is a project of the Wingnut Anarchist Collective. We hope to maintain a positive relationship with our community and the individuals within it.  Therefore we feel that it is important for us to be upfront and honest about who we are and what we believe.

As anarchists, we do our best to live by the principles of mutual aid, anti-authoritarianism, and direct action.

Mutual aid for us encompasses a wide variety of things.  We believe in sharing our resources – material, physical, mental and emotional.  We share our food, labor, knowledge and support freely with those who would do the same for us.  We strive to create safe spaces for children, elders, disabled people, those with emotional or psychological trauma, those in recovery from drug and alcohol abuse, and people of all races, religions, national origins, genders and sexual orientations.
